Transferring Your Website to Hostico

Step-by-step detailed instructions on how to transfer a website to Hostico

Views 301Published 01/11/2023by Mark Dohi

Content transfer between two web service providers is one of the most requested procedures at Hostico. To streamline this process, a transfer tool has been designed that allows scheduling the transfer without the need to contact the support team.

Below, we will go through each aspect of the transfer tool:

I. Transfer via backup archive
II. Transfer via backup link
III. Transfer via authentication data

I. Transfer via backup archive

The transfer tool (Transfer Wizard) can be found on the Hostico homepage by scrolling to the bottom of the window, positioned above the footer pages.

After clicking the green button (Transfer Wizard), the page related to the transfer module will open.

Note: If you are not logged into your Hostico client account, at the top, you will see an email field.
If you have a client account, you will first need to log in to your Hostico client account, and then request the migration. However, if you don't have a client account, at the top, you will need to enter the email address where you want your Hostico account to be created.

In the Hostname section (1), you will enter the domain name that is the subject of the transfer.

In the Plan menu (2), you will select a hosting package from the list to which you want the new site to be migrated. If there is no active hosting package or you don't yet have a Hostico client account, you will need to choose a new hosting package. The pricing of hosting packages is available in the plan menu, but for a complete overview, we recommend visiting the Web Hosting and VPS pages.

To enable the migration, you will need to select a hosting package that has similar resources to what you currently have. If you choose a hosting package with insufficient resources, the Hostico technical team will contact you regarding an upgrade.

choosing the right package

Next, you will select the time when the transfer will be performed, within a maximum interval of 1 week from the time of submitting the request. If you want the transfer to be completed as quickly as possible, select the top option.

Note: It should be noted that the migration process usually takes place at night (after 00:00) to minimize the impact on DNS zone propagation. If you select the "As quickly as possible" option, the migration may even occur during the day, which can lead to temporary interruptions in the functionality of the website and emails.

To enable the migration, you will need to provide us with a full backup archive. This is done by selecting a file (4), and then uploading the archive from your local storage with one of the following extensions: .zip, .tgz, .tar.gz.

If you have other aspects to mention or specific requirements, this information can be conveyed in the additional information section (5).

If everything is in order, check the agreement to the terms, and then finalize the procedure by submitting the request.

II. Transfer via backup link

If you don't have the backup archive in local storage but have a link from where it can be downloaded, you will go to the Link Backup section and enter the link from which Hostico operators can download the archive or files related to the migrated website.

III. Transfer via authentication data

In cases where you don't have the local file or a link to the archive, migration can be requested by manually copying from the current hosting service. To do this, you will need to opt for migration through the "Control Panel," where you will enter the link to the control panel (e.g., cPanel), the username, and the access password.

migration via authentication data

Please note that migration from a control panel is possible only if the service is still active, so if you choose this option, please ensure that the control panel is still accessible.

After completing the migration process, you will receive written confirmation from Hostico's technical operators, as well as any additional information you need to consider.

Note:

  • After the content migration, you will be notified about the update of the nameservers. However, if you wish for this process to be carried out by us, the domain associated with the migrated site must be transferred to Hostico. The domain transfer process for .ro domains is based on the transfer key (generated from the ROTLD control panel), and for other extensions, the key can be obtained either from your current provider's control panel or by contacting their support team. After generating the key, you can place the transfer order directly on the website or by communicating the key to office@hostico.com, after which we will place the transfer order in your account.
  • Some providers do not allow migration to other servers. Therefore, if such a situation is encountered, you will be notified about this.
  • File migration is performed based on the volume and number of transfers on a given day. If you have selected a migration date, and there are already a large number of transfers scheduled for that day, you will be contacted to reschedule for another date.
  • If you initially choose a hosting package, and the resources are at the maximum limit, you can request an upgrade order by paying the price difference between the two services until the due date.
  • In the case where the migrated website is an older one (with an older PHP version), there is a possibility that certain aspects of the site may not be identical after migration and may require subsequent intervention from you or Hostico's Technical Team.
  • In situations where migration is done to a VPS service, it is advisable to opt for a control panel with which you are familiar. For file safety, we recommend also selecting the backup function.
